Broccoli (or Kale) and Potato Gratin

1 pound potatoes
1 head of broccoli or 1 bunch kale
¼ c olive oil
4 cloves garlic, minced
½ c breadcrumbs
½ c cheese, shredded
¼ c milk or cream
salt and pepper, to taste

Preheat oven to 350. Boil potatoes in salted water until just tender. When cool enough to handle, cut into ¼ inch slices. Cut broccoli into bite sized florets and put in a bowl. Add olive oil, garlic, salt, and pepper and stir well. (or, In a large bowl, combine the olive oil, garlic, 2 teaspoons salt and pepper. Add the kale and rub the olive oil mixture aggressively into the leaves.) Add potatoes, ½ the cheese, and milk. Mix well. Pour mixture into a 9 inch baking dish and coat with breadcrumbs and remaining cheese. Cover with foil and bake 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for 15-20 minutes. The top should be brown and crispy.
